In 1961, Sam Mele opened Sam’s Cold Cuts in the Olney section of Philadelphia. For 16 years the Mele family was producing ravioli, fresh pastas and Italian sausage, with recipes brought with them from Calabria, Italy. In 1977, the business was moved to Willow Grove. They expanded; Sam’s Italian Market began providing the community with a wide selection of imported Italian products, delicatessen meats, Italian sausage and pasta products made on the premises. With Sam’s own foresight and his son Adam’s hard work, the bakery was added in 1988.
You will find a wide assortment of baked goods, including Italian breads, rolls and tomato pies all baked in-house. In keeping with Sam’s tradition of providing the customer with what they’ve asked for, we have our own line of freshly prepared entrees. In 2006 the market was remodeled and the newest addition was our line of cakes and Italian pastries. We also expanded our catering menu to include many Italian delicacies.
Sadly, in 2010 we lost our founder Salvatore (Sam) Mele. His commitment to quality and service has been passed on to his sons Adam and Dino who head the business to the present day.
Come in for a visit and experience how over 50 years of fine Italian recipes, the freshest ingredients and impeccable service have made Sam’s Italian Market and Bakery a successful family owned and operated business.
